Description

An Ancient Egyptian hand-carved stone figurine of a hippo. First Millenium BC. Presumably made of granite. In ancient Egypt, hippopotamuses held a complex and often contradictory role. They were associated with both the positive qualities of life and regeneration, as well as being feared as dangerous and aggressive animals. The hippopotamus was a significant symbol, particularly in relation to the goddess Taweret, who was depicted with hippo features and associated with childbirth and fertility.
