Provenance: This artwork originally belonged to Neil Diamond during the early 1960s, a formative period in his career as a songwriter. At the time, Diamond resided in an apartment in the Prospect area of Brooklyn while preparing for a move to Los Angeles. When he left New York, the apartment—and its contents—was taken over by Joe Venneri, a founding member of the musical group The Tokens, best known for their chart-topping hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight, on which Venneri played banjo. According to Joe Venneri, this piece hung in Neil Diamond’s Brooklyn apartment and was left behind when Diamond moved west. Diamond reportedly told Venneri to keep it. It remained in Venneris possession for decades. This artwork thus carries both musical and cultural significance, having been directly associated with Neil Diamond at the beginning of his legendary career and preserved by a member of one of the era's iconic vocal groups.
