An antique Chinese Cizhou-type stoneware pillow. Presumably Song dynasty, ca. 12th century AD. Rectangular piece with rounded corners, pierced relief leaf ornament on the sides. Coated first with white and then black slip, which was incised and then cut away to leave the design of a rider hand-standing on horseback. Transparent glaze on top. The term Cizhou ware refers to a type of sturdy stoneware produced at many kilns throughout the northern Chinese provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shaanxi.
