Characteristic motifs include floating figures, angels, a horse and a bird, floral compositions, candles, the image of Vece, the town in southern France where Chagall lived and worked. The work is executed in a soft blue palette, unique to the series of sheets worked in Vece, and embodies the artists characteristic lightness, magical narrative, and folkloric symbolism. Provenance: in 1998 the print was acquired by gallery owner Alexander Gerson, owner of SerfArt Exchange, official dealer and collector of Soviet Non-Conformist Art and Modern Art, from art dealer Wilbur Pirs, Philadelphia, USA. The work is accompanied by a certificate from a well-known autograph expert: Herman Darvick, Herman Darvick Autograph Auctions, author of Collecting Autographs and a recognized specialist in signature authentication. The certificate states: This Chagall print has been authentically signed by Marc Chagall. The work remained in the collection of Alexander Gerson up to the present time and has never been offered at public auction. Mark Zakharovich Chagall is a Russian and French artist of Jewish origin.
