Rare lithograph depicting 'the sardine fishers' Borgex (French, late 19th century) The Sardine Gatherers, from L’Estampe Moderne, 1898 Hand-coloured etching on paper, signed and dated “Borgex ’98” in the plate, depicting Breton fisherwomen gathering sardines along a coastal shoreline, with fishing vessels anchored offshore. The composition reflects the late-19th-century French interest in regional life and labour, rendered with finely etched linework and delicately applied period hand colouring. Published as part of L’Estampe Moderne (1897–1899), the influential Parisian print series showcasing contemporary graphic artists of the Belle Époque. Printed on laid paper with a clearly defined plate mark and bearing the embossed blind stamp associated with the series’ publisher.
