A monumental mixed media polyptych by the renowned Soviet Nonconformist artist Sergei Afrika Bugaev, Russian, born 1966. Comprises four large copper panels treated with acid, acrylic, and silicone. The surface is densely etched with a cryptic rebus of Cyrillic typography, Soviet military figures, industrial machinery, and allegorical symbols, characteristic of his Rebus series which critiques and deconstructs Soviet ideology. Provenance is well-documented: originally from I-20 Gallery, New York; acquired by a private collection in 1998; and subsequently sold at Bonhams, Boston. Bugaev is a central figure in the Leningrad avant-garde and is famously known for his role in the cult film Assa.
