Description

This pair of small blue and white cups is a representative work from the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. The exterior is delicately painted in underglaze blue with motifs of the Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ba Ji Xiang), a traditional emblem of good fortune. The brushwork is refined, with elegant, flowing lines, and the glaze is smooth and ivory-toned, characteristic of imperial porcelain from the Chenghua kilns. The form is petite and graceful, with well-balanced proportions. Each base bears a six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double square: “大明成化年製” (Made during the Chenghua reign of the Great Ming), written in regular script with neat precision. Cups of this type were often used by scholars or at the imperial court. Chenghua porcelain is especially prized for its fine body, subtle tones, and delicate aesthetic—hallmarks of one of the most celebrated periods in Chinese ceramic history.
