Description
A West African bronze head mask of an Oba from the Kingdom of Benin. These heads were created to be placed on ancestral altars in the royal palace to honor deceased kings. The figure on top is a leopard, a primary symbol of the Obas power. Prominent features include elegantly arched eyebrows, finely detailed eyes, and decorative markings on the forehead, including a distinctive multiple line motif which is symbolic within the culture. A forehead is adorned with two vertical openings and has one large round opening on the top.
