Lot 0260: A PIERRE AUBRET BRONZE ROMAN EMPIRE SCULPTURE

41 reviews

Pierre Aubret (1853 to 1912) bronze mantel historicism style sculpture with exquisite details, depicting a Roman Empire warrior dressed in a toga with a sword sitting surrounded by classic style ruins. Unsigned. This kind of piece does refer to certain imagery, romantic in essence, idealizing the figure of the Roman Emperor Constantine. The sword is a symbol of the new official faith of Christianity; the ruins as a metaphor of the end of paganism. Early 20th century.
