Description

An excellent pair of antique opposing dore bronze Furietti Centaur reductions of marble sculptures that were excavated at Hadrians Villa in Tivoli in 1735. Both sculptures are raised on rectangular marble pedestals with Neoclassical gilt bronze accents. Circa 1900. The models are named after Giuseppe Furietti, Italian, 1685 to 1764, a Roman Catholic cardinal, an antiquarian and philologist, and a collector of antiquities whose ambitious excavations at the site of Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli rewarded him with the Furietti Centaurs and other Roman sculpture. Following their discovery, the Centaurs became highly admired by affluent collectors and especially by Grand Tour travelers.
