Description
A finely hand carved wooden and colored Kwele antelope mask, from Gabon, Central Africa. Used in fertility rituals. These masks depict an antelope, whose meat is eaten at the end of the Bat ritual. It is believed that such masks represent benevolent forest spirits. The horns on the mask are present in honor of the forest spirits, which are associated with the presence of ancestors.
