Description
An antique late 19th century Russian Orthodox icon representing Jesus in the Christ Pantocrator iconography, known in Western Christianity as Christ in Majesty. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Housed in a silver riza or oklad with repousse floral decor and polychrome enamel accents. Hallmarked with an 84 Russian Imperial silver standard, a St. Petersburg town mark, a Cyrillic assay mark under the date 1870 and the makers mark HH. The icon was presumably produced in Palekh, one of the largest centers of Russian icon painting and lacquer art. Russian Christian Religious Items and Collectibles, Icon Painting.

Overall good vintage condition. Signs of wear and age. Slight chips and cracks in wood. Slight stains and scuffs in paint. Slight dents and discoloration in silver. Refer to photos. Sold as is.
