An antique American leather and metal firefighters helmet by Cairns and Brother. The helmet has a wide brim to protect against falling debris and water and features a hand painted image of President George Washington on the front and back. Marked with a label of manufacturer and inscribed Captain inside. The New York firm of Cairns and Brother has a long history of manufacturing helmets. The founder of the company, H.T. Gratacap, was a volunteer firefighter in New York City who began as a producer of leather luggage. In 1836 he invented the first American fire helmet, named the New Yorker.
