Description

An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon representing the Mother of God of Unexpected Joy. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with gilding. The piece depicts a man kneeling in prayer to an icon of Virgin Mary with Jesus Child, flanked by full-length representations of four saints. The text of the mans prayer in Church Slavonic is below. The iconography of the image arose under the influence of the story described by Dimitry of Rostov in his work Irrigated Fleece, 1683.
